Watching the Basket

I remember when I was first informed of minimal techno I admit I thought it was out there but I have changed my mind completely. I’ve garnered a lot of recommendations for movies, music, books, etc but never as many as when I was working as a DJ at RainyDawg Radio, the University of Washington student internet radio station. Being able to say ‘yes’ means having to turn down a few recommendations – I only have so much of an attention span to devote to critical listening. In retrospect, when I passed on listening to minimal techno I made a big mistake. Hindsight is 20/20 and minimal techno in 2009 would seem to take a backseat to the cold metal sounds of Berghain and Ostgut Tontrager, or the drum and bass influenced techno of Peverelist and Appleblim, or the deep house sounds of Move D and the newest croppings of Detroit. Better late than never, I say.

This mix is representative of my picks among the genre but it focuses on the cool, aloof German style of techno music.

Selection and Mixing

For the past 6 months I’ve been listening to various podcasts, mixes and compilations wherever I can get them. I want to gain insight into the creation of a ’set’, specifically as a compilation of tracks put together to evoke different feelings as well as excitement over pop music and electronic dance music. I’ve been listening to a lot of mixes, from labels, DJs, producers, and friends to see how they approach their mixes, and I’ve been thinking about how I want to approach mixing and selection myself.

My goal here is to hear different types of music and more music in general, to start mixing songs and to put out mixes for people to hear. If you like this, I’m hoping to get some more out soon for you to enjoy… I’m presenting another mini-set of songs, you can

that’s just about 18 minutes long and features three songs: ‘Wanna Tell’ by Luomo, ‘IHTAW’ by Shed, and ‘Lohn and Brot’ by Efdemin. I was putting together these three songs a few months ago for a little mix CD but this was about as far as I got.

The uneven and syncopated snare starts ‘Wanna Tell’ and the rhythms quickly grow and multiply. Luomo combines this groovy bass line with cut-up and distorted vocals- his signature style- and comes up with this beautiful melody on top of a heavily syncopated and polyrhythmic song. Shed continues the distorted underwater vocals and lush production over a rolling drum that seems almost too fast for my ears to follow. I think my favorite is the part where the bass stops in ‘Lohn and Brot’ right as the keys come in with this ethereal sounding melody, winding up and around.
