Newworldaquarium – The Dead Bears, released on NWAQ
Losing my grip on basic, recurring daily activities is a personal fear. The headlines are all too overwhelming- unwelcomed distractions that disrupt day to day life. And yet the more welcomed distraction, new techno and deep house from Newworldaquarium is just as disruptive but at least I can function.
The Dead Bears is covered with a warm tape hiss strong enough to lead me to believe I’m listening to an FM broadcast from either twenty years ago or sometime in the not-too-distant future. The Dead Bears was released on CD late 2008, previously only available on 12″ record, so this is the first time that I’m hearing it. The tracks here are content to groove and build up tension constantly, turning bars into minutes; sometimes I have to check the time of the track to see how long I’ve been listening, only to find out frustratingly that the song is only halfway through. Newworldaquarium employs a variety of house-style rhythms and retro synths that are immediately head-nodding and groovey, with slight variations in percussion dropping out or popping into the mix. The beat comes knocking and persists but most of the driving is done with the warm sounding retro melodies. With little or no notice, the tracks will halt, with almost no comedown before the next track. I suppose that for some this will be frustrating but I think for those more inclined to the mellow, “deep house” sound will find this to be an especially rewarding listen!
